About Me

I am an Associate Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychology at Portland State University and the Education Coordinator for the Mind and Life Institute.

I received my Ph.D. from the Combined Program in Education and Psychology at the University of Michigan and hold master’s degrees in religion and psychology, developmental psychology and clinical social work.

My primary research focuses on topics at the intersection of education, human development, and more recently, contemplative science.  I have studied some of the ways by which schools, as primary cultural contexts of human development, can affect young people’s identity development, social-emotional well being, motivation to learn, and achievement. I am also interested in better understanding the promises and problems of adolescent identity development in the context of immigration and globalization; as well as the professional identity development of teachers and ways to help teachers be more effective, more mindful and compassionate, and more fulfilled in their roles as classroom teachers.

My current research and writing is in the area of contemplative education – how practices associated with mindfulness and compassion can be skillfully integrated into school settings in order to reduce stress, enhance well-being, and cultivate qualities such as self-control, calmness, mental clarity and empathy and among educators, staff, and students alike.

Thank you for visiting my blog and stay in touch.
With great love and respect,
